Calibration Frequency
6th May 2025
One of the most common questions about the use of gas detection instruments is how often should I calibrate my gas monitor?
The answer to this question depends largely on how the portable instrument is used. For example: If the monitor is used where it is vital that the readings hold up for court and legal applications - calibrate before and after each use. If it is used a couple of times a year - it should be calibrated prior to each use.
Generally, it is recommended that users develop calibration frequency based on the applications and use of the instrument. For most users, this falls between one and three months. If a user doesn't want to develop their own frequency, it is recommended to calibrate once a month.
A calibration cycle can be extended to 3 - 6 monthis if users use a "bump test" prior to using the instrument, and it passes the test. A tolerance for passing a bump test is determined by frequency and use. Typical tolerance could be +/-20% or +/- 30%, or triggering the instrument's alarm.
Newer (RKI specifically) instruments have auto-calibration, which makes the process quick and easy. Currently, RKI portable gas monitors have a default calibration interval of 90 days.
Calibration for fixed systems depends on the application of use and the type of sensors. Typically, calibration for most fixed systems are between 3 and 6 months, but frequency may be more or less often based on use.
*Note of precaution: If it is suspected that an instrument has been subjected to any condition that could lead to adverse impact on the unit, it is recommended that a bump test or calibration is made.
